TOPIC: ACT PREP TIPS

STRATEGY 1:

Know the Parts of a Graph

Most ACT science graphs have three key components: the axis (the vertical and horizontal lines that run along the edges of a graph) the labels (words, numbers and letters that name the different things that the graph measures or quantifies) and the key (a guide to what different symbols mean on the graph).

STRATEGY 2:

Connect the Text to the Graph

No graph on the ACT Science section exists in isolation. Every single graph is connected to the text. Without the explanation in the passage, you cannot be 100% sure how to read and use the graph.

STRATEGY 3:

Connect the Questions to the Graph

Of course, the finer points of how you need to use the graphs can’t all be found in the graphs themselves or the science reading passage. Your understanding of the graphs and their use isn’t complete until you also read the graph-related questions.

BRINGING ALL OF THESE STRATEGIES TOGETHER

These strategies can be pulled together in a graph comprehension checklist. Here are the simple steps you can take to understand any graph you find on the ACT:

  • Check the X-axis and Y-axis of the graph and make note of what the labels say.
  • Check the information in the graph key, if there is a key. (Not all ACT Science graphs have a key.)
  • Double-check the text for additional information about the graph.
  • Carefully check each graph-related question for more information about elements of the graph and how these elements are used.

This four-step process will allow you to understand any graph on the ACT Science test, no matter how complicated. Most graphs on the ACT are about as complex as the ones I’ve shown you in this post and the previous one, but you’re likely to come across at least one graph that’s more complicated on the ACT. When you do, the four steps above can really be a life saver.

ACT PRACTICE - Let's try what we have learned. We will be doing chart and Graph exercise.

TOPIC: ACT PREP TIPS

You want to focus on scientific reasoning in your ACT prep, rather than scientific content. That means you should know about the scientific method, know how to read graphs, and know the basics of each content area—and then spend your time working on ACT Science practice questions and sections so that you can get a good feeling for exactly how the exam likes to test each concept.

With all of that said, don’t ignore the science completely as you prepare. You should be familiar with the basic principles of four scientific disciplines to help guide your reasoning throughout the test:

  • Physical Sciences
  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Physics

Even if you haven’t taken a physics class before, or are only beginning it when you take the ACT, remember that ACT Science can only test a limited amount of information to remain fair for all students (and thus standardized). With time and work, you can master this material, no matter where you currently are in your science studies.

ANALYZING DATA ON THE ACT SCIENCE TEST

For Data Interpretation and Research Summaries questions on the ACT Science Test, you will often be presented with a set of graphs and tables and required to answer relevant questions. Remember, it’s important to take the time and thoroughly analyze the data before jumping to the questions.

SOME TIPS TO REMEMBER:

Tip #1 – Read all of the labels.
What is in each column? What is in each row? What is the range of values? Does the data have a direct or indirect relationship? Do the lines have positive or negative slopes? Where was there the most change or growth? Where was there the least?  With this kind of discipline, you will already understand what is being presented. The question becomes almost an afterthought, and you’ll know exactly where to look for the correct information.

Tip #2 – You won’t need all the information to solve.
Chances are the correct answer hinges on just one or two numbers from the data tables or graphs. Most ACT students get ACT Science questions involving data analysis wrong because they do not know what data to use to solve, not because the math involved is difficult. You will likely only be performing calculations as simple and easy as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Tip #3 – Round decimals and fractions.
Let the answer choices be your guide. If they are very close together, then you will need to be more accurate in your approximation. However, if the answer choices are markedly far apart, then by all means round to the nearest integer.

The Takeaway
Think of this section as an open book test: all the information you need to answer the question is right there in front of you! The trick is to know how to find it without getting bogged down in unnecessary information.

Break for Strategies:
Data Representation and Research Summaries Passages

There are a total of seven passages in the ACT Science section, split among a few types.

Here is the overview:

  • 3 Data Representation Passages
    • 5 or 6 questions per passage
  • 3 Research Summaries Passages
    • 5 or 6 questions per passage
  • 1 Conflicting Viewpoints Passage
    • 7 questions per passage

Each passage type also has unique types of questions, all requiring their own approaches.

Data Representation and Research Summaries are similar in that both rely primarily on the visuals (graphs, tables, etc.) to relay information. You can use the same strategy for both passages.

Strategy: Go straight to the questions without reading. Try to answer all of the questions using only the visuals.

Many students get bogged down in reading the science passage. There are dozens of data points to consider, and most of them won't have any questions about them. So you'll end up wasting time trying to understand data that really aren't important.

Instead, try to answer questions without reading the passage. This lets you avoid wasting too much time understanding parts of the passage that aren't important.

For the questions you can't answer with visuals, circle them and return to them later.

After you have answered all the questions you could with visuals, as I mentioned above, skim the passage for keywords to answer the remaining question(s).

Game 3

MONDAY - 11/13

TOPIC: ACT Preparation

Passage Type 1: Data Representation Passages

These passages are similar to those found in science journals and text. They present you with a short paragraph or two as well as one to four visual representations of data (such as graphs, tables, and/or scatterplots). The passages will mention specific studies and label sections as Study 1/2/3.
Each Data Representation Passage has 5 or 6 questions. In the PrepScholar ACT Program, we categorize the questions for Data Representation into 3 categories (not everyone categorizes them the same way).

Question Type 1: Factual Questions

These questions simply ask you to relay factual information that is presented in the passage. To answer these questions, you need to read the graphs, tables, and/or scatterplots. You need to pull out specific data points without further calculation/inferences.

Question Type 2: Interpreting Trends Questions

These questions ask you to evaluate graphs, tables, and/or scatterplots to decide if there is a relationship. Is it increasing or decreasing? Is there an inverse relationship or direct relationship? There may be more advanced versions of these questions in which there is no clear relationship between the data points.

Question Type 3: Calculations Questions

These questions ask you to take what is given and figure out where it is going. Given the data, what might Y be at value X?  The questions ask you to make extrapolations and interpolations.

THIS IS A FREE ONLINE TEST WHICH WILL HELP YOU DETERMINE WHICH CONCEPTS YOU UNDERSTAND AND WHICH YOU NEED PRACTICE. YOU CAN USE THE RESULTS TO CREATE A PERSONALIZED STUDY PLAN.

TUESDAY - 11/14

Passage Type 2: Research Summaries Passages

These passages look similar to the Data Representation Passages in that they usually present you with a short paragraph or two plus visuals (graphs, tables, scatterplots, or images),

The difference is that Research Summaries Passages focus on a specific experiment or a couple of experiments.  The passages will usually label sections as Experiment 1/2/3 and mention a scientist or student who is conducting the experiment. There may be an image of how the experiments are set up.

Notice how unlike the Type 1 Data Representation passages above, Type 2 Research Summary passages mention specific experiments.

Each Research Summaries Passage has 5 or 6 questions. The types of questions they ask are also very different from Type 1 Data Representation passages.

Question Type 1: Experimental Design/Researcher Intent Questions

These questions ask you to determine why the researcher designed the experiment a certain way. What are the controls and variables in the experiment? What is the hypotheses on which the experiment is based?

Question Type 2: Hypothetical Experimental Questions

These questions ask you to determine what would happen if there was a change in the experiment (in the temperature, solution, etc). They often require you to understand the trend of the data to predict how the outcome would change if the experiment were changed.

Question Type 3: Interpreting Experiments Questions

These questions ask you interpret the information that you are given. Based on the data shown, is this statement supported? These questions are often framed in a 2x2 matrix: Yes because A, Yes because B, No because A, No because B.

WEDNESDAY - 11/15

TOPIC: ACT Preparation

Passage Type 3: Conflicting Viewpoints Passage

PLEASE PLACE YOUR FINISHED ANSWER SHEET IN THE BOX MARKED ACT PREP. If you do not , you will not receive credit for this assignment.

This passage is the most different. The passage presents you with two short essays (and looks similar to an English passage). The essays represent conflicting scientific viewpoints or theories. It is very important that you figure out the difference in opinion between the two writers. Sometimes the difference will be subtle and not opposite.
There are two types of questions in the Conflicting Viewpoints Passage:

Question Type 1: Understanding of Viewpoints Questions

These questions check to make sure you understand each author's point of view.  What would researcher X predict to happen?

Question Type 2: Comparing Viewpoints Questions

These questions ask you to point out the similarities and differences between the authors.

I recommend saving this passage for last because it takes the most time for most people since it requires you to read the whole passage to answer the questions.

These questions check to make sure you understand each author's point of view.  What would researcher X predict to happen?

Question Type 2: Comparing Viewpoints Questions

FRIDAY - 9/29

TOPIC: ACT Preparation

Passage Type 3: Conflicting Viewpoints Passage

ACT Science Trick #4: Pay Attention To The Numbers

The Rationale: Even though this isn't the ACT Mathematics test, you'll still be expected to work with numbers on the Science Reasoning exam, which is why this ACT Science trick is key. Often, experiments or research will be explained numerically in a table or graph, and those numbers could be explained in millimeters in one table and meters in another. If you accidentally count the millimeters as meters, you could be in big trouble. Pay attention to those abbreviations.

A Helpful Reminder: Look for big numerical changes or differences in tables or charts. If Weeks 1, 2, and 3 had similar numbers, but Week 4's numbers spiked, you'd better believe there will be a question asking for an explanation of the change.

PASSAGE PRACTICE:

Warm Up:

ACT Science Trick #3: Cross Off Information You Don't Need

The Rationale: The ACT Test writers sometimes include information that is unnecessary for solving any of the questions. For instance, on many Research Summaries passages, where there are two or three experiments to consider, some of the data inside accompanying tables, charts or graphs will not be used at all. You could have five questions about coffee bean #1, and none about coffee bean #2. If you're getting all the coffee bean data confused, feel free to cross off the unused portions!

A Helpful Reminder: It may be helpful to write a sentence describing the basic gist of each experiment, especially if it's complicated. That way, you won't have to reread the passage to figure out exactly what happened each time.

TUESDAY - 8/15

TOPIC: ACT Preparation

Warm Up:

ACT Science Trick #1: Read The Data Representation Passages First

The Rationale: On the ACT Science Reasoning test, you'll see three different types of passages: Data Representation, Conflicting Viewpoints, and Research Summaries. Data Representation passages are the easiest because they incorporate the least amount of reading. They basically ask you to interpret coordinating tables, draw inferences from graphics, and analyze other diagrams and figures. In some cases, you can go straight to the first DR question and answer it correctly without reading any explanatory material whatsoever. You may just have to refer to one chart! So it makes sense to get as many points as is possible right out of the gate by answering those questions first before slogging through the lengthy Conflicting Viewpoints or Research Summaries passages.

A Helpful Reminder: You'll know it's a Data Representation passage if you see several large graphics like charts, tables, diagrams, and graphs. If you see a lot of reading in paragraph format, you're not reading a DR passage!

PASSAGE PRACTICE:

You have in your packet several "DR passages." Try them - time yourself.

WEDNESDAY - 8/16

TOPIC: ACT Preparation

Warm Up:

ACT Science Trick #2: Use Shorthand Notes In The Conflicting Viewpoints Passage

The Rationale: One of the passages you'll see on the ACT Science Reasoning test will involve two or three differing takes on one theory in physics, earth sciences, biology, or chemistry. Your job will be to interpret each theory to locate its key components and find the similarities and differences between the two. This is tough to do, especially when the theories could be about radioactivity or thermodynamics. The terminology starts getting confusing. So, use an ACT Science trick! Right when you start reading, make notes in plain language on the side of the paragraph. Summarize each theorist's basic premise. Make a list of the key components of each. List complex processes in order with arrows showing causality. You won't get bogged down in the language if you summarize as you go.

A Helpful Reminder: Since the Conflicting Viewpoints passage contains seven questions versus the Research Summaries' six, complete this passage right after the Data Representation passages. You'll get a higher possibility of points (7 vs. 6) with this set of data.

PASSAGE PRACTICE:

You have in your packet several "CVP" Try them - time yourself.
