Walking Logs

WALKING ACROSS AMERICA

LESSON PLAN:

Keeping Track of Your Progress

  • Each student will be responsible for logging their own distances.
  • One student from our class will collect the weekly totals and then report the class totals to me.
  • I will then post a flag on the big map next to the teachers lounge.
  • The class who makes it to the end of the trail or the furthest before the last day of school, will be honored with a pizza party.
  • All participants will receive a certificate of participation.

HOW to Start Your Adventure

  1. This Section Mile Tracker for the American Discovery Trail should
help you know exactly where they are on your journey.
  2. Chart your walking minutes, miles, or steps on a virtual walk across the USA  on the American Discovery Trail Map.
  3.  This web walking adventure covers 5048 miles - which you can complete as 5048 walking minutes, 504,800 steps,  or 5048 miles.
  4. As you enjoy your fitness walking, you can follow along with the sights you would see on the trail. You can also fill in the segments on the printable map.
  5.  Follow the following LINK to start your adventure!
  6. Visit the American Discovery Trailsite for maps and segment descriptions.
  7. Total your minutes, miles or steps as you walk, and as you reach each milestone note it on your Webwalking USA walking log.

Here is your link to your walking trail

Webwalking USA Logs

Here is a link to the MAP you can track your progress!

Choose how you want to track your walks. By using the minutes option or the pedometer steps option you will get across the USA faster. Or you may want to record it as miles. Print out the following pages to use as logs for your virtual walk.

Tracking Physical Activity- For your enjoyment

Miles Log
Track your true mileage and chart it each day.
Example 1: 5 miles = 5 miles

Minutes Log
Chart your walking minutes and equate them to miles on the trail.
You will see your progress build each day as a great motivator to walk.
Example: 60 minutes walking = 60 miles on the trail.

Steps Log
If you use a pedometer, you can chart your steps each day. Delete the last two digits of the total (divide by 100) and equate that to miles on the trail.
Example: 6000 steps = 60 miles on the trail.

Designing Your Flag:

Each team of students will design two flags:

  • A small flag that will be placed on a pushpin and placed on the map. This flag will be moved weekly as we track their progress. These flags should be no larger than 1.5 by 3.0 inches.
  • The other will be approximately 12x18. This will be placed around the map and serve as a representation of their team.
  • Let’s create a healthy atmosphere of competition!

Here are two websites that allow you to design your own flag.
